CASE STUDY:

Building Media Presence of the City of Stockton and Mayor Michael Tubbs

In 2016, the City of Stockton and the Office of the Mayor had little to no media presence to get information out to the community they served. The City also sits in a market that many describe as a “media desert”, with little-to-no mainstream media outlets to effectively leverage their messaging.

To help them build out reach to their community and liais with important constituencies, we produced for the City of Stockton a number of short films for social media that explained key initiatives and proposals.

We also built the official website for the Office of the Mayor, as well as several other websites for the City of Stockon’s initiatives which allowed community members to more easily access information, data, reports, and communicate directly with their city government.

We worked with the Office of Mayor Michael Tubbs and Senator Kamala Harris in 2017 to produce a video to address health outcomes, education, public safety, and the economy in underprivileged communities.

We also partnered with Stockton Unified School District to develop, design, and execute the initial launch of StocktonScholars.org, a $20 million scholarship fund for Stockton students to attend a four year college or vocational school.

The short films were part of a number of statewide virtual meetings with emergency local managers led by Listos California and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. The meetings sought to address racial and cultural biases in emergency preparedness and response strategies and to provide a platform for Californians to communicate the barriers they face in getting prepared. Our collaboration with Listos California helped the campaign surpass its goal of reaching 1 million vulnerable community members with in-depth, culturally competent and accessible content.

In the wake of the California wildfires that destroyed the city of Paradise in 2018, we also partnered with the City of Stockton and the NBA G-League team Stockton Kings to build StocktonHelpsParadise.org – a one-stop destination for Stockton citizens to donate money to support their neighbors in Northern California. In 2019, it was revealed that our website helped to raise more than $100,000 for the victims of the wildfires.

We produced a number of videos for social media detailing the mayor’s bold plan to tackle income inequality in his community, by initiating a basic income pilot program titled Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration, or SEED.

The video was widely circulated and featured in local and national news coverage, helping to kickstart a national conversation about a basic income floor for every American.

Our work with the City of Stockton and Mayor Michael Tubbs has helped to bring real results to the City of Stockton. Our efforts in Stockton have caught the attention of mainstream media outlets such as ABC News, Forbes, BET, Forbes, Vox, CNN, MSNBC, BBC,
