Michael J. Payton is a dynamic force in filmmaking, entrepreneurship, and activism, blending popular culture, visual storytelling, and social change from his roots in Oakland, California. Influenced by his mother’s passion for Gospel music, R&B, and poetry, Michael ventured into hip-hop history and video production, establishing a foundation for his creative and academic pursuits. He earned a BA in Media Communications and African-American Studies from San Francisco State University, supported by the Shawn Carter Foundation, and an MA in Media Culture Communication from NYU.

Michael founded CSUITEMUSIC, LLC to integrate art with societal impact, gaining recognition on platforms like BET, MTV, and VH1, and collaborating with figures like Jay-Z on educational and social justice initiatives. His versatility includes partnerships with Microsoft and the REFORM Alliance, and impactful work in state and local government initiatives.

A significant milestone was his appointment as an executive fellow in the office of California Governor Jerry Brown, where he used his storytelling skills to highlight volunteer efforts, earning a certificate in Applied Policy and Government from Sacramento State University. In 2023, Michael and his team joined the Sojourn Project on a trip to the Deep South, producing a documentary to connect Civil Rights Movement lessons with current social issues.

Michael’s work, including his upcoming documentary, exemplifies his commitment to using media for advocacy, education, and bridging historical insights with modern-day activism. His contributions are pivotal in promoting societal change through art and storytelling.
